How to Crochet Child's Poncho Tutorial

This Child's Poncho was made for my 3-year-old but can be adjusted for different sizes. If you want to make it for a more minor child, I would go down a hook size and go up a hook size for an older child. It's so cute to wear for any occasion. It’s roomy, so it’s perfect for 3- 5-year-olds. Enjoy this Crochet Child's Poncho Pattern!

If you're a beginner crocheter, this poncho tutorial is for you! We'll teach you the basics of crochet in a step-by-step format so you can crochet this poncho easily. Make this crochet child poncho, and you'll have a stylish addition to your child's wardrobe!

Do we need to slip stitch 2times if using the same colour yarn?

amyscrochetpatterns said...

I would slip stitch into the chains space, but if you arent changing colors then that no more slip stitches.

How did you get the v look?

amyscrochetpatterns said...

will the increases

SANDY S said...

How many would you chain for an adult size?

Unknown said...

Sandy S.......I made an adult poncho for myself and started with 108 chains. If you google ponchos and take a look at some of the adult patterns you should be able to get an idea of what size you start with.

I am finishing my second child's poncho. I added Pom poms and fringe. They both turned out beautiful. Don't know how yo upload the pictures.

Hi!
I would like to make this Poncho for a 2 year old in the Feathers wool could you please tell me how many stitches I would need
Thank you

I don't think the pattern is correct… I tried to do a total of nine clusters and it was uneven. Do you need to have a clusters and then an increase, then another eight clusters in your second increase. I also wish you would have shown how to start the next rose because it looks like you only did the chain three and then one more double crochet… Very confused right now.

Did you watch the video?

Sl st into the chain 1 space, then sl st with Pink yarn, Chain 3 (Counts as a dc), work 2 dc in the same chain 1 space, *Chain 1, work 3 dc in the next chain 1 space, *Repeat for a total of 9(3 dc's),Chain 1, work 3 dc in the next chain 1 space, chain 1, work 3 dc, (creates an increase, so you have a 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in next chain 1 space after 9( 3 dc's ), **Chain 1, work 3 dc the next chain 1 space, **Repeat for a total of 8 times, chain 1, work 3 dc in the beginning chain 1 space, Chain 1, sl st in the beginning Chain 3 (this will create a 3 dc, chain 1, 3 dc increase in the beginning 3 dc) sl st.

I would just go up a hook size or two

Unknown said...

how many balls of wool for each colour did you use?

amyscrochetpatterns said...

two of each

Unknown said...

I am new to crocheting and in very confused I chained on 80 therefore not sure when to increase because it does not match up with the instrutions of 9 please advise

amyscrochetpatterns said...

i would chain 72, I made this pattern for 72, then go up a hook size or two to make it bigger

Instead of connecting the rows using a slip stitch, I skip the chain 1 after the 3rd dc and single crochet into the 3rd chain of the first chain 3. Doing it this way looks cleaner and you're not losing your beginning chain 3 under the final 3 dc in the round.

Sarah Stewart said...

The video does a increase at the end of the row too. There aren't enough ch in mine to do an extra inc

amyscrochetpatterns said...

ok I rewatched the video, it should be chain 72, then sc around, which is 72 sc, then 3 dc, ch1, skip 1, for you are right, 18x 3dc,. Round 3: Then do 9(3dc), increase, then 8 (3dc), then increase for round 3. thats what I did in the video, Im not sure why you arent getting it right, make sure you are doing 72 stitches, and make sure you start your first stitch as a Ch3, which counts as dc, dc in the next 2, ch 1, skip 1 sc, then 3 dc in the next 3 sc, *Repeat across.

How many chains would I need to make a 7yr size, and would I follow the increases as per your 3yr old pattern?
I really love the look of this poncho but not sure how and where to do the increases for a 7yr old.
Would appreciate your help. Thank you very much
Thelma

amyscrochetpatterns said...

you can go up a hook size for a bigger size.

Unknown said...

I am in the same situation as the above. I need to know how many DC to do before I do the increases. Unfortunately, I only have one needle right now, so using a larger needle won't work for me.

Unknown said...

I don't have a larger hook. I need to know how many dc to do before I increase. I did 80 chain stitches.

amyscrochetpatterns said...

try this, I have the pattern as chain 72, but for 80 see if this works, you should be able to do 3 dc, ch 1 (9 times), then increase, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, then 3 dc, ch 1, (9 times), then increase, 3 dc, ch 1, 3dc, in the beginning chain 1 space

Unknown said...

Round 2 =18x3dc
Round 3 9dc+1increase= 8 ch1 spaces left, dc×3 in each 8 space =0 for final increase??

Unknown said...

I am msking it with chsin 88. So the 9 clusters dont work out evenly. So how do we figure that out, please.

Unknown said...

I'm with unknown, I am using 72 chains, single crochet next round. I have 18 sets of 3 DC. So if i have 9 sets of 3 DC , 1 increase and then 8 sets of 3 DC there is not a space left for the increase. Can anyone help me with this?

unknown, did you watch the video, that should help you? I just watch the video, and it worked out with the chain 72 count. make sure to count all your stitches, maybe you counted wrong and follow the video, that really helps when you need help.

Hi how many chains would I started for a toddler who wears 5t.

amyscrochetpatterns said...

this should fit a 5 t too, or you can go up a hook size, I cant change the chain count or it changes the whole pattern and I dont have time to change it all up.

Unknown said...

Hi there I finish my first poncho of 3 years old... So want to do a 5 year old must I continue with 72 chains and use a 6mm hook?

amyscrochetpatterns said...

Id follow the pattern exactly, this sized for toddler to 5 to 6 years old, its roomy

VH said...

If I want to make it in one color, are there any changes in instructions?

amyscrochetpatterns said...

no, you can follow the pattern with one color

Thank you so much for this pattern Amy. And the accompanying video is really helpful.
I've made several of these in a number of sizes over the years for nephews and nieces and myself. I'm just about to start one for my sister! The multiple of 8 note makes this very easy to size up or down as long as you mark where each corner is.
As knitter, this was my first ever crochet project and I've not looked back since!
Thank you for going to all this effort and providing it all for free, it's much appreciated.

I am new to crocheting, but think I can make this pattern. I want to crochet this pattern for my great niece who is 8yrs old. Can someone help me with sizing the pattern. Any help is greatly appreciated. I have no idea where to begin. Thank you.

Hey i want to make pocho
Am making it for the first time for 4 yr old
Should i increasre chain to 80 or use 6 mm hook instead
Please guide

Unknown said...

How many stitches would you make for child age 6? I know you said to increase by 8, but how many would stitch in between the sides to make the V shape?

amyscrochetpatterns said...

I would keep it the same pattern for age 6, its very roomy

B said...

How many gram yarn is required for this poncho

amyscrochetpatterns said...

I dont go by grams, one skien or less for each color

Callmerj said...

I am convinced the count is not right! Row 2, 18 sets of 3dcs, check! Row 3, doing 9 sets of 3 dc twice plus 2 increases does not fit in those 18 sets of 3dcs. I've taken this apart 5 times and it just doesn't fit...Only 2 sets of 8dcs plus the increases fit in those 18 sets of 3dcs. Watching the video does not help.

Amy, thank you for this dimple poncho. I have decreased my chain as I’m making for a younger child and I followed my instincts and it’s coming out right. I just have a question about the original that is puzzling me. If I do the 3 dc Ch 1 , 9 times and then increase and on the other side 8 times and increase won’t it be uneven? Or am I missing something.

Did you watch the video, it may help you to watch the video too.
